	Merkel, Sarkozy announce joint proposal to save the euro (German, French) German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Friday jointly announced a French-German plan to save the eurozone. The plan is discussed by EU leaders over lunch at the EU summit in Brussels, where the situation in Egypt and a common EU energy proposal also are on the agenda. Merkel and Sarkozy said they propose a special summit in March for eurozone countries at which they will try to agree a framework for increased harmonization of economic policies in eurozone countries. Non-eurozone countries are free to join these talks. Belgium has already indicated it is not pleased with the proposal because it would require it to give up its automatic indexation of wages.
